Erinsaga, Jim Fitzpatrick

Jim Fitzpatrick es un ilustrador irlandés. Puede decirse que es el artista que mejor ha sabido plasmar las antiguas leyendas irlandesas a través de sus dibujos y pinturas, recogiendo los aspectos mágicos y heroicos de la más completa mitología céltica que ha llegado hasta nosotros.

Sus libros de ilustraciones más importantes (basados ambos en la mitología irlandesa reflejada en el Lebor Gabála o Libro de las Invasiones) son THE BOOK OF THE CONQUEST (Paper Tiger), que describe las luchas de los Tuatha Dé Danann contra los Firbolg, y SILVER ARM (Paper Tiger), que es la continuación del anterior, donde los mismos danianos se enfrentan a los fomores.

También tiene un libro recopilatorio, llamado ERINSAGA (Dé Danann Press, 1985), donde se recoge lo mejor de su trabajo a lo largo de diez años.

Con el mismo nombre se publicó un disco inspirado en este libro: Jim Fitzpatrick's Erin Saga (Round Tower/Ringsend Road, 1989)

Los gálatas

Los gálatas fueron los celtas provenientes de la Galia que en el siglo III aC emigraron hacia oriente; tras pasar por Grecia y ser repelidos por los reyes de Pérgamo Eumenes I y Atalo I, acabaron asentándose en Asia Menor; en la zona de Capadocia (a la que llamaron Galacia), establecieron su capital, Ancyra (actual Ankara). Su nuevo patronímico, gálatas, pasó a la posteridad gracias al Nuevo Testamento, donde está la epístola que San Pablo les dirigió.

Uno de los reyes de Pérgamo que venció a aquellos celtas antes de asentarse en Capadocia, Atalo I de Pérgamo, encargó una escultura, probablemente de bronce, para conmemorar la victoria, aunque al mismo tiempo sirve de homenaje al valor del adversario.

La estatua representa a un celta mortalmente herido, desnudo y sentado sobre su escudo, con el pelo encrespado, un bigote a estilo galo y un torque en el cuello. Esta imagen está en consonancia con muchas de las crónicas que se escribieron sobre los celtas: el torque que distinguía a los miembros de la nobleza, el pelo encalado para aparentar más fiereza o la desnudez en el campo de batalla mencionada por distintos historiadores o cronistas griegos y romanos, como los gestates citados por Julio César. También el detalle de estar sobre el escudo: cuando estaban a punto de morir en una batalla fuera de su patria, se acurrucaban sobre su escudo para no morir en tierra extraña; a algunos personajes importantes los llegaron a devolver a su tribu sobre su escudo tras haber caído en otro país.
